Advantages of Teeth Whitening

How many of us get a confidence boost when a stranger gives us a compliment? Have you ever paid attention to how much of a positive effect this has on your self-esteem? The same applies to teeth whitening. Teeth-whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like. Criscione Fmaily Dental offers two options for teeth whitneing; both have been found to provide positive results.

With all of the lifestyle habits and environmental factors that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leave them a little dull. Fortunately, through our tray whitening system or using professional strength whitening strips, your pearly whites can revive their shine. In addition, teeth-whitening can also take years off of your appearance. This is because as we age, over time, our teeth darken and can become yellow, brown, or even develop a grey tint (which also may be due to heredity and/or eating habits). Your smile speaks volumes about who you are and leaves an everlasting impression, so it’s only natural that you want it to be as radiant as possible.

If you would like to discuss your teeth whitening options, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at the practice, visit www.criscionefamilydentistry.com for more information. The Purpose of Night Guards

A night guard is a piece of hard plastic made from impressions of your teeth that is placed on the upper and lower teeth while you sleep. Reasons for needing one include bruxism, the act of grinding your teeth while you sleep. The purpose of the night guard is to protect your teeth and jaws. Here at Criscione Family Dental we offer custom-made night guards to our patients to fit your bite evenly providing a more effective form of treatment.

If you already grind your teeth, you will grind them much harder in sleep than while you are awake. When this action occurs, it can cause chipping, fractures, excessive wear and loosening of the teeth. Overall, the night guard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching. When your lips come together, your teeth will be apart which initiates a muscle relaxation process. When muscles are relaxed, your teeth will rest on bite pads which are made of hybrid resilient material that slips comfortably between your teeth.

If you grind your teeth or find yourself waking up with jaw pain, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about night guards as well as other services we provide, visit www.criscionefamilydental.com for more information. Wisdom Teeth Extractions

The wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are the final set of molars to erupt. Not everyone decides to keep these teeth, nor are they necessary for having a healthy, beautiful smile. Here at Criscione Family Dentistry we may suggest wisdom teeth removal if they are causing pain to the patient or look prone to infection. Another reason for wisdom teeth extractions is overcrowding in the mouth if they don’t fully emerge.

Once it has been determined that a wisdom tooth is problematic, extraction is performed. If the wisdom teeth are impacted and embedded in the bone, our doctor will put an incision into the gums and remove the tooth or teeth in sections in order to minimize the amount of bone being removed. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the tooth can be pulled out with any discomfort and several stitches may be required to close the surgical site and promote healing of the overlying tissue.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and causing you pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a great way to quickly and affordably repair small imperfections on teeth. It is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person’s smile. If you have decayed, chipped, or cracked teeth, our doctors at Criscione Family Dentistry are happy to discuss dental bonding to see if it’s right for you.

Unlike veneers and crowns, which are customized tooth coverings that must be manufactured in a lab, bonding usually can be done in one office visit unless several teeth are involved. Another advantage, compared to these two cosmetic options, is that the least amount of tooth enamel is removed. If you have very small imperfections on your teeth, bonding could be the answer. In addition to providing cosmetic relief, bonding can also be used to fill cavities.

If you desire a more aesthetically pleasing smile, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about bonding as well as the other services we provide, visit www.criscionefamilydental.com for more information. The Root Canal Procedure

If you have a tooth that is causing you pain, depending on the severity you may need a root canal. At Criscione Family dental we can save your tooth with this procedure if the tooth itself is badly damaged or infected. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning the canals inside the tooth’s root. It is a scary term for most, but we hope to put our patients more at ease by explaining the procedure step-by-step.

The area around the tooth is first numbed with an anesthetic to start the procedure. One of our dentists will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. They will then be able to remove the infected tissue and clean the canal. After the infection has been removed, the space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha. Your tooth will then be placed with a temporary crown until you are able to be fitted with a permanent one.

If you have questions about an upcoming procedure, give us a call. To learn more about root canals as well as the services we provide, visit www.criscionefamilydental.com for more information. The Proper Flossing Technique

Flossing is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums and chances are you are either not flossing, or not flossing enough. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day to help remove plaque from the areas between your teeth where the toothbrush can’t reach. At Criscione Family Dentistry we’ve heard every excuse in the book as to why our patients aren’t flossing and today we are going to put an end to them. Next time you stand in front of the mirror to brush your teeth, break out the floss and follow these tips.

Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty.

Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.

When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a “C” shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions. Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth and don’t forget the back ones!

Are You Brushing Correctly?

At Criscione Family Dentistry we want you to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime. To do this, you need to brush at least twice a day for two minutes. Many of you may not realize that there is a proper brushing technique, so allow us to introduce you to the correct way to brush your teeth.

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes.

  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

Remember that brushing your teeth isn’t the only part of a complete dental routine. Don’t forget to floss and visit us regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of cells that invade and cause damage to surrounding tissue. Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that doesn’t go away. At Criscione Family Dental, our staff utilizes oral cancer screenings to identify mouth cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by a dentist or doctor to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth. The examination can be carried out in the dental chair using gloved hands, a mirror and good lighting. The screening will consist of a visual inspection of the mouth and palpation of the jaw and neck.

The oral cavity includes your lips, cheek lining, gums, front part of your tongue, floor of the mouth beneath the tongue and the hard palate that makes up the roof of your mouth. During your dental visit, one of our doctors can talk to you about your health history and examine these areas for signs of mouth and/or throat cancer.
